1. Loss of Control Review
Over the past 5 years more than 60% of RAAus fatal accidents are believed to have occurred due to loss of control events, but what do we mean when we talk about loss of control, and what a are the most common scenarios resulting in a loss of control?
2. Just DON'T Pull Back
Trees at the end of the runway approaching faster than expected? Need to quickly commence a go-around? Encountered a near-miss? Do you have what it takes to resist the urge to pull back on the controls?
3. Last Line of Defence - Stall Warning Devices
Flight training in order to recognise and avoid a stalls must always be the primary focus in order to maintain safe flying operations, however, as a last line of defence should you consider fitment of a stall warning or angle of attack device within your aircraft?
4. Runway Loss of Control
One of the leading causes of aircraft damage from occurrences reported to RAAus is due to runway loss of control events. Watch RAAus' video on how to avoid runway loss of control.
5. Heavy Landing Inspections
Hard landings - A reportable occurrence that all pilots encounter at some point during their flying, but did you know that a heavy landing inspection is required by a maintainer following a hard landing? Although the aircraft may look undamaged on first review it is possible further undercarriage or structural damage has occurred with the potential to endanger fellow pilots who operate the aircraft.
6. Stopping In A Hurry - Aircraft Brakes
Aircraft brakes operate under extreme stress and in a wide variety of conditions. So obviously they are susceptible to malfunction and damage. In many of the OMS reports received by RAAus, brakes have been a contributing factor leading to incidents and accidents, such as runway loss of control.
ADDITIONAL CONTENT
RAAus member and well known bush flier, Tim Howes, recently released a review from an accident which occurred in an RAAus aircraft.
NOTE: Some of the techniques explained within this video are specific to bush flying operations and should not be conducted by members without specific training in the conduct of bush flying operations.
